Acknowledging and celebrating heritage and identity recognition months is extremely important. These designated times serve as reminders of past and current achievements and advancements, with each spotlight building awareness and understanding. However, the commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging should extend beyond the confines of designated months.
Individuals who identify with the celebrated heritages often take center stage on company blogs and social media platforms. While great for marketing and representation, are these individuals recognized for their year-round contributions? In what ways? Is there increased scrutiny towards Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) during heritage months in an effort to boost the company’s image? What ongoing support have ERGs received to contribute to their outputs? Even with the understanding that we can’t solve them all, are global issues affecting celebrated heritages even being acknowledged within organizations?
Recognizing the importance of addressing the varying factors that may affect employees’ sense of inclusion and belonging, and directly impact their mental health and performance, I, Diana Vasquez, founded Beyond Diversity Consulting. Beyond Diversity Consulting offers comprehensive solutions to foster Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in workplaces. We believe in profound transformations rooted in knowledge, reflection, guidance, and action. Our philosophy aims to create lasting change in organizations, fostering environments where diversity thrives, voices are valued, and innovation flourishes.
As we navigate the complexities of DEI, let’s remember that it’s not confined to specific months or initiatives. It’s a continuous journey that demands ongoing dedication and action.
